Listen up, 'Divas'; if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. You think you don't need resistance training?? After age 21 it goes all down hill from here. Did you know that you are losing a half pound of muscle a year if you are not doing anything to preserve your muscle mass. In addition, after age 60 the rate of muscle loss (gasp!) - doubles!
Talk about changing your 'fluff' to 'stuff'! Exercising with weights is the absolute best method to help you lose fat and change your shape. Your strength training workouts will help you to tone, shape and strengthen your muscle fibers and minimize the "fatty marbling" within the muscle. (The next time you go food shopping, take a look in the meat section. Make note of the abundance of white matter threading throughout some cuts of meat. Is that what you want your muscle to have?) Good eating habits and cardiovascular exercise are also important, but read on, you will soon understand how superior the results are from resistance or strength training.
During strength or resistance training you are
stimulating your muscles to change
by doing repetitive exercises with weights, weight machines, resistance bands, or your own body weight. You are exerting muscular effort to move an object (resistance) with the goal of increasing your muscle strength and endurance. Without a doubt,
resistance training
will help you to get stronger, to have more muscle tone or definition, and to increase your muscular endurance. With all the multitasking, energy demanding duties that you take on at home, work, school, church, extracurricular activities, having more strength and endurance will make your daily activities easier and a lot less tiring.
