Water aerobics workouts are fun and effective low-impact exercises that are performed in the shallow end of the pool. The exercises are easy on the joints, perfect for pregnant women, those who haven't exercised in a while, and those who are undergoing rehabilitation. These exercise classes in the pool are also known as Aqua Aerobics, Waterobics, AquaFit, and have caught on with fitness enthusiasts looking for more variety in their workouts or a gentler exercise program for their joints. These aqua sessions are a great way to get an aerobic workout and build strength without putting too much stress on the joints. But, don’t be fooled into thinking these classes can’t challenge you! Even though your aqua fit class may not raise your heart rate as much as running, you will still get aerobic benefits and burn ample calories.
Calories burned in a session of pool exercise may vary depending upon your skill level, your intensity, how much you weigh and your buoyancy. The number of calories burned will also vary based on how deep the pool is. Aqua calisthenics can burn between 270 to 400 calories per hour with less risk of injury compared to other forms of exercise. Your land exercises such as walking, running, and cycling can be duplicated in the pool environment. As you participate in the aqua fit classes you will discover how the instructor amps up the workout with noodles, aqua dumbbells, floatation belts and other really neat toys. You will discover that you are burning lots of calories with aqua fit sessions. The skeptics always ask me if my aqua fit class is effective for weight loss and, the answer is, absolutely! Just as in any other form of exercise, to drop the pounds you need to burn more calories per day than you consume.
Can’t swim? Not to worry, the format of the classes is a good fit for people who are uncoordinated or non-athletic. The class format is to use the exercises and equipment to go against the resistance of the water to build muscular strength and aerobic endurance. You are erect for the most part performing similar exercises that you would do on land. I have taken some of my ‘scaredy cats’ and taught them how to pedal or cycle on an aqua noodle like a bicycle. Some have mastered the skill of walking without their feet touching the pool floor. Now that is a cardiovascular feat! My intermediate and advanced participants and personal training clients get even more of a calorie burn and a greater challenge to their upper and lower body by deep-water running while wearing a waist flotation belt that keeps them suspended at the deep end of the pool.
'Wet' exercise programs are growing in popularity. Exercise enthusiasts are discovering that anything that you do with dumbbells can be performed in the pool environment. You can get a full body work out, in a fun and invigorating atmosphere.
